About the Role
This role combines both design and engineering. The role embraces the intersection of both, where the UX and UI envisioned can influence the data model's design and flexibility, and an understanding of technology's capabilities can simplify or improve the design.
The role works closely with the VP of Engineering and is part of a department that is doubling from five to over ten members in the next year.
At Ashby, your work will touch over 100,000 weekly active users and millions of candidates per week, serving notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake.
What We’re Building Ashby is building Talent Acquisition software designed to provide the highest standard of tooling The goal is to build intelligent, powerful software that provides insights and automates or simplifies tasks for recruiting teams, such as scheduling, tracking interviewer preparation, and managing interview loads.
Your First Three Months at Ashby
- Your dev environment is set up with a single script.
- You will push your first product change on day one.
- You will spend your time shipping product changes that provide a tour of the codebase and best practices, with the scope increasing from simple copy changes to the delivery of impactful features.
- Your manager will conduct 30, 60, and 90-day reviews to provide feedback and calibrate.
- You will be paired with a peer to answer questions, pair program, and check in often.
- The team will run training sessions on culture, product, engineering process, and technical architecture.
What You'll Be Doing
- Working on challenging design problems.
- Expanding and enhancing the in-house Design System.
- Consulting on bespoke design work needed by Product Engineers.
- Redesigning the mobile web app by talking with customers, wireframing new flows, and implementing the Design System to make wireframes a reality.
- Building flexible, composable components in the Design System to allow engineers to build consistent setup wizards.
- Helping Product Engineers improve information hierarchy and scannability for features like candidate assessments.

Interview Process
There are no Leetcode or whiteboard exercises. The process consists of three rounds:
- Introduction call with the VP of Engineering (30m, live). Be prepared to screen-share examples of your work.
- A second round consisting of either a technical screen (1h, live) or a design take-home (~3h async, 30m live).
- Three interviews (3h, live) including a deep dive into a past Design System or design project, a Design System interview, and the remaining component from the second round (technical screen or design take-home).
Note: We may start with an additional 30m screen with a recruiter depending on leadership bandwidth. Written guidance is provided for each round. You will meet 3–4 people in Design Engineering. If we do not provide an offer, we will provide feedback.
